Course CEDL.0141.2.0
In the field of mental health counseling, we often encounter clients who are in crisis or in an agitated state. Clients may become agitated or aggressive when they experience triggering events or beliefs that they are not safe or heard. De-escalation techniques, strong communication skills, and the ability to build rapport are vital skills for clinicians providing mental health treatment. Utilizing research-based interventions for de-escalation can improve outcomes and reduce the overall risk to the client, the community, and the clinician. This course will equip attendees with a knowledge base and practical interventions to better serve clients in an agitated state with a supportive and therapeutic approach.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize 5 early warning signs of escalation
- Explore the impact of trauma experiences for clients in an aggressive state
- Describe at least 2 counseling theories which inform de-escalation techniques
- Identify 5 techniques to de-escalate a client in crisis
- Define communication skills to reduce tension and aggression in client interactions
2.0 hours of continuing education credit will be available to those who complete the entire course presentation, take and pass the post-test (70% of questions, at a minimum, must be answered correctly), and complete a course evaluation.
