Filial Therapy or Child-Parent Relationship Therapy is a play based intervention based on the principle that parents are in the best position to be an effective therapeutic agent for their children. Developed by Louise and Bernard Guerney in the 1960’s with later work by Landreth and colleagues, this intervention has grown into an important part of the play therapist toolkit. This workshop will provide the essentials for conducting Filial Therapy. Plus, the opportunity for participating in a filial session in between the workshop sessions. The evidence-based research and the theoretical background for the model will also be presented.

Objectives:

  1. The attendees will be able to place Filial Therapy in the context of empirically validated therapies for children and families.
  2. The attendees will be able to describe the theoretical orientation of Filial Therapy and discuss how they match or mismatch with their personal theoretical orientation.
  3. The attendees will be able to describe the variations of Filial Therapy.
  4. The attendees will be able to list treatment objectives often used with Filial Therapy.
  5. Attendees will be able to list the contents of the Filial Therapy Kit.
  6. Attendees will be able to describe how to present Filial Therapy to parents.
  7. The attendees will be able to describe the typical ten-week protocol for Filial Therapy following the Modified Guerney Model and the Landreth Model.
  8. Participants will list at least 3 handouts for parents.
  9. The attendees will be able to develop a protocol for using Filial Therapy in their practice.
  10. Participants will be able to reflect on doing a model Filial Therapy session as opposed to a play therapy session.
